Dear Diary,

Today I felt so privileged to be here in the Amazon Rainforest. Not everyone has this amazing opportunity to be here in the jungle. To be here, see the sights, smell the scents, and experience the Las Piedras River.

Today we arrived in the Amazon at 9 am after traveling by peki-peki 40 miles up the river from Puerto Maldonado with my friends

I felt so blessed to travel with my friends and feed my adventurous spirit that has been confined for too long. I cannot wait to open my mind to the beauty of this jungle. I’ve lived in Perú all my life but have never explored this river. I have heard people speak of this place and now I get to actually see it for myself. I cannot wait to take a walk through the dense jungle and see the biodiversity of the animals, but I also am also excited to be in such a remote place that has a booming population of trees instead of people.

We woke up very early in the morning, took a lengthy trip across the vast river and journeyed for a long, muddy, hilly walk in the Biodiversity capital of the world. Our destination…the acclaimed Macaw claylick.

During our journey to the claylick I could feel the sweat dripping down my face because it was so hot. I drank almost all of my water before we even reached shore. Then, we waited for an enormous amount of time for the birds to arrive and I felt relieved when the skies finally opened and the cool rain fell. The humidity was instantly gone and my body began to cool.

Despite the relief from the rain, there were no birds in sight. We returned to the boat disappointed from our adventure because we didn’t see any Macaws (Ara chloropterus). The Macaw is the largest bird in the area and they visit the claylick early each morning in search of the nutrient rich minerals found in the clay. They seek these minerals in order to balance the amount of tannin they consume.

With this trip, I’m learning that I need to have more patience. But just as we got to the boat, a huge flock of Macaws flew over our heads towards the claylick. We saw them so much closer from the boat than we ever would have from the lookout. They are the most beautiful creatures. In that moment, my purpose was so clear. This place is special and I want to spend the rest of my life keeping it special for other people to experience.

As I lay, wrapped in a blanket surrounded by darkness, I write to you as my flashlight glares off the page. In my reflections, I realized two things.

1.  I need to have more patience
2. I need to have a little more luck

The jungle has given me an excellent opportunity to reflect and I know my friends are asleep, but the animals in the jungle around me certainly are not! I think this experience is going to change my life, but I guess only time will tell.

Querido Diario,

Hoy me siento tan privilegiado que estar aquí en la selva Amazona. Todos no tienen esta oportunidad asombrosa. Para estar aquí; ver las vistas, oler los olores y tener esta experiencia con Las Piedras.

Hoy llegamos en la Amazonia a las nueve de la mañana después de viajamos por el peki-peki por cuarenta millas en el rio con mis amigos.

Me siento bendito a viajar con mis amigos y liberar mi espíritu aventurero que había estado confinado por mucho tiempo. No puedo esperar a abrir mi mente a la belleza de la selva. Vivía en Perú por toda mi vida y nunca he explorado a Las Piedras. He oído los cuentos pero ahora puedo verlo. No puedo esperar a caminar por el bosque y ver la biodiversidad de los animales, pero estoy emocionado también a estar en un lugar remoto que tienen más árboles que personas.

Nos despertamos muy temprano de la mañana, viajábamos por muchos millas del rio, y caminábamos por horas al capital de biodiversidad del mundo. Nuestra destinación: la collpa de los guacamayos; un lugar aclamado.

Durante nuestro viaje a la collpa, podía sentir el sudor en la cara…hacía mucho calor. Bebía casi todo de mi agua antes de llegamos. Entonces, esperábamos por muchas horas, y me sentía aliviado cuando el cielo abrió finalmente y empezó a llover. La humidad salió y me sentía más fresco.

A despecho del alivio de la lluvia, no había nada pájaros. Llegamos al bote y estábamos desilusionados porque no vimos los guacamayos. El guacamayo es el pájaro más grande del región y visitan la collpa muy temprano cada mañana para buscar por los minerales que tienen los nutrientes que se necesitan.

En este viaje, estoy aprendiendo que necesito tener paciencia. Cuando llegamos al bote, de repente un rebaño muy largo de guacamayos volaba por arriba para la collba. Los veíamos más cerca por el bote que si habían volaban por la collba. Los guacamayos son las creaturas más hermosas de la selva. En este momento, mi propósito fue claro. Este lugar es especial y quiero vivir acá por el resto de mi vida, para mantener la experiencia especial para otras personas.

Ahora, estoy acostado en mi cama, rodeado del oscuro, y escribo dos cosas que me di cuenta:

1. Necesito tener más paciencia.
2. Necesito tener un poco más suerte.

La selva me ha tenido una oportunidad excelente a reflejar. Yo sé que mis amigos están durmiendo, ¡pero los animales están despiertos! Pienso que esta experiencia va a cambiar mi vida, pero sólo el tiempo lo dirá.
